Just back from an extended holiday in the UK, resident reviewer George Peden has wasted no time in pulling off the wrapping, loading his CD player, and sharing some of the latest singles from some of the best Texas has to offer.
Billy Holt - Long Gone
The tune is a pop/country toe-tapper. Blended with a voice that suits, the up-tempo tale of lost and leavin’ love, the type that shows long before the door slams, is a possible radio spin with its tight harmonies and understated piano adding to the mix.
Curious I listened to some earlier music on their MySpace site. The possibilities are there. The band can write, play and sound fresh. However, the band, who has a growing Facebook presence, is forgetting that when you hit your straps, there is a wider world that needs to know.
Work on your web site is friendly advice, otherwise long gone is a reality.

Pat Waters and the Chainlink Band - Writing on the Floor
This is classic kick back country. The piano-pounded cautionary tale that the drinkin’ ain’t killed me (yet) but I can read the writin’ on the floor sets the tempo for a tailgate party.
Taken from their CD, The Devil In Me, this five-piece band know the moves needed to make fan friendly music. Waters’ voice is a tight honky tonk fit that melds with ache and fun in equal measure.
I’d sure like to hear more from these guys. I think you might too.
The writing on the wall says 4/5

Leyla Fences - Get The Truck Outta Here
I’ll admit it: I don’t know much about Leyla Fences and her music. That’s all about to change. On the strength of this powered single, I am a fan.
The single comes from her second album, Itty bitty twang twang. Given the positive reviews her music is receiving, I thought it was time for a listen. I was not disappointed.
The spirited tale of a stalled and spinning love comes with a fiery female answer to the woe – get gone, and get the truck outta here.
Fences not only writes and produces, but this talented Texan can holler down a thunderstorm with ease. Her powerful voice is rich, melodic, driven precisely by the mood and character of the songs she sings.
Forget the expensive blurbs, the overplayed hype and the media assaults promoting colours and gals, there is a lot of good, really good, female talent waiting just beyond Billboard.
