Ron Williams - Foolproof
By: Cheryl Harvey Hill, Sr.Editor
It's been a while since an album like this one has come across my desk and I welcomed the music home like a cherished, long-lost, old friend. It was about a decade ago when I reviewed the very first album by Ron Williams. Back then I wrote, “This is classic country with the emphasis on class.” Well, he has done it again and if I'm not mistaken, I believe that makes him three for three!
As it turns out, this album was a real family affair. His alluring baritone voice is one of the best you'll ever hear but you get a special bonus on this album since the harmony vocals are provided by none other than his amazing mother, the legendary, singer/songwriter, Leona Williams. The CD contains an even dozen of true, “your singin' my life”, country songs. Williams had a hand in writing four of the twelve songs. He wrote “Under the Spell”, “Things I Almost Had With You”, “Too Close to the Border”, and “Dance 'till the Cows Come Home”, with his mother and his equally talented step-father songwriter Dave Kirby. He wrote “Bring It On”with Howard Perdew, and Shake It Off” with Sonny Burgess.
He says, “My wife's favorite cut is 'Let's Go Back Some Day' but I call 'I Will', which is my favorite, my Amy song, because the lyrics reminds me of us.” Both songs are beautiful and both lyrically strong but for me, selecting a favorite track proved absolutely futile.
There's “Maybe Love Will Save the Day”. I love, love, loved it! And I really enjoyed the feel-good “Too Close To The Border” with its cleverly written lyrics and delightful music. Then too, I have to mention Williams' cover of the Chuck Berry classic, “Nadine” with its stellar guitar riffs. And I really like “Things I Almost Had With You” because of its strong lyrics, superb vocals, and great instrumentals. Of course I would be amiss if I didn't mention the title cut. Actually, as you can tell, I truly enjoyed all twelve tracks and if you are a fan of traditional country music, you are going to wear this album out.
In the end, whether the music is traditional country, or simply music, when the singer is Ron Williams, you can rest assured the musical consolidation is simply Foolproof.
