Lonnie Spiker: That’s When The Crazy Kicks In
By: George Peden
Country music is losing its once-traditional edge, which is sad but true to these ears. For proof, turn on the radio. I'm reaching for "off" because of the bland, washed-out ballad, half-sparked rocker, and the arrival of clones and copy-cats.
But with a credo of “real country music the way you loved it” salvation is riding hard to radio stations and programmers who prize authenticity over simplistic high-rotation.
Enter Lonnie Spiker.
Spiker born in Pennsylvania, and now calling Nashville home, has been playing and recording for decades. His first release, the 2001 My Future Ain't What It Used To Be was the kindling to a slow burn that now sees almost 2000 fans on Facebook.
To fuel the momentum, while working on a new album, Spiker has released a single – “That’s When the Crazy Kicks In”. The single has been universally fast-dropped by Ross Allen, the head honcho for Hillcrest Music Canada, a multi-platform distribution outlet.
Having had a lifelong love of “real” country, Spiker moves into the vein easily with a tune that rings of bars, sawdust and vocal appeal. Telling the story of torment – the type proving three in a love triangle pleases no one – when the crazy kicks in, Spiker survives well with a band that backs the heartache with anything but pain.
