Toby Keith - Tampa 2012
By: Connie Breeden, Editor/Owner
Even the rain couldn't dampen the spirits of all the Toby Keith fans at the "800 ask Gary Amphitheatre" in Tampa, Florida. The amphitheatre was beyond full and keeping dry was not a priority but getting as close to Keith as possible was. Watching the rain soaked fans enjoy themselves by singing along and dancing in the aisles, was the most fun I have had in a quite while.
Keith often kicks off his concert with a video. This year the video shows him buying an old abandoned, worn down, falling apart, tavern named "Clancy's". At the end of the video, the curtain drops and there stood Keith. The seats throughout the ampitheatre vibrated from the intensity of the excited fans. My eyes immediately went to the giant jukebox. Throughout the concert the jukebox played videos or displayed pictures to accompany all the favorite tunes of the wild, rowdy, and damp-but-don't-givadamn, fans.
It was impossible to miss a cleverly written sign that stated, "My name is Kaylee, I just turned five, 'I Wanna Talk About Me' with you." He invited her to come on stage and sing with him. This little girl, barely up to Keith's knees, brought the house down when she took the mic and sang with him, word for word, this classic Keith tune. Look out Toby!
When he sang his well known hit "Red Solo Cup", he called to the stage "Sick Swag", a local hip hop group. They had remixed his song hip hop style and put it up on YouTube and someone had told Keith about it. Although he turned the microphones over to them, at one point, he jumped in and rapped with them. Just goes to show you, even the hip hoppers listen to country music.
Last year I took my Mom to the concert and Keith's music caused her to revert back to being a sixteen year old groupie/psycho fan. And the more out of control and silly she got, the further I moved away from her. Well this year I was the sixteen year old, out-of-control groupie and no one moved away. It's the music, it apparently has that affect on everyone. We were all the biggest group of, out of control, soaked to the skin, psycho fans, and we had a ball singing and dancing until the last curtain call.
