Robert Larrabee - Middle Of Something
By:George Peden, Sr.Staff Journalist
Making music comes easy to Alberta singer/songwriter Robert Larrabee. After all he’s been doing it for over 30 years. Having honed his craft as a well-known tribute act in around Canada and beyond, the handsome voice has released his album, Middle of Something.
With 10 radio friendly tunes, the time is right to discard the sequins, cape, glasses and hat – the wardrobe of his retro impersonations – and prepare for fame in his own right. The first cut to radio, the title track, is gathering interest, spins, and, importantly, fans. “I couldn’t be more pleased,” tells Larrabee from his website. Having funded the recording venture himself, his pride is right reward.
Collaborating with noted Nashville writer Jess Cates (Backstreet Boys among others) Larrabee has delivered an album that deserves applause. Produced in Nashville, his influences of dated rock and current country play out with a voice that is rich, controlled and stylish. With an even sprinkling of fiddle, steel and Dobro the musical elements support an album of tunes that soon become catchy on the across town commute.
I found the defiance of “Who Cares”, the truth of “Guy Thing” and the piano-etched reflections offered on the thoughtful “Every Cross” – a tale of the meaning of freeway crosses – complimented a well-crafted release.
The album is out now.
