Kelly Lang - Obsession
by Cheryl Harvey Hill, Sr. Staff Journalist
During my two decades as a music reviewer, I've been privileged to hear some of the best singers in the world sing some of the best songs ever written, but sadly, not every great song gets sung by the best singer and not every great singer always records the best songs. That is unless your name is Kelly Lang. This is a very special project for her since it is the first time she is the sole writer and producer of every track on one of her albums. Suffice it to say, it becomes very clear, from the first track to last, that for this talented singer/songwriter, music truly is her passion. In fact, the album kicks off with "My New Obsession", and this easy listening melody, with the heartfelt lyrics and uplifting, free-flowing music, just might be enough to make this album your new Obsession.
Choosing a favorite off this album isn't possible. After all is said and done, I think it's a toss up between the first song and the last song. Ironically, you can take that two ways; metaphorically speaking or literally. Seriously, either way, it's all good and it's the truth because the first song and the last are my picks for two of the best, but there are several, like ten others in between, that I also liked. All kidding aside, there is sure to be something for everybody to like on this album.
The majority of the songs were written specifically for this album but I was delighted to see that she also included a couple of encores and one of them just happens to be one of my all-time favorite songs, "Under A Tennessee Moon". Her love of this state is clearly evident in this eloquently written ode to the home of "Music City". If you didn't yearn to visit Tennessee before you heard this song, you will by the time it ends. The visual lyrics and lilting music take you on a melodious tour of this scenic state with its rich history and so many beloved landmarks.
The final track, "I'll Just Hold My Breath", will leave you breathless. This particular song perfectly illustrates the creativity of her writing and ability to emote relatable lyrics. She has a way of delivering the words so you really do feel the emotion. Beautiful, simply beautiful, is the perfect way to describe her and the words she breathes life into when she sets them to music.
Although there are several people she is grateful to for their support and/or input on this project, she feels a special debt of gratitude to her longtime friend, Gus Arrendale and Springer Mountain Farms Chicken who sponsored this project and many other musical events over the years.
